Food!

Okay, no more depressing posts... we swear. The weather is really nice as of late (15 degrees celsius, on average) and moods are lifting! And what better thing to do when it's warm than eat?

Here's a post dedicated to some food and cooking missions we've recently taken on.

Really missed the chicken soup my mom and grandma make back at home, so I tried my best to recreate the masterpiece... and I must say... it came out pretty good!

Good reminder of home.

And then we made shawarma! That was a mission and a half. We've been hearing for months that there's a shop somewhere around here that sold items from the Philippines, Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia. Well, we finally decided to find it and bought tons of chick peas to make hummus with. Had to soak the peas overnight, boil them for two hours, blend them, chill them, mix with tahini (which we had to make as well, from scratch)... and bam! Hummus!

And what good is hummus without pitas? And what to do when such an item is nowhere to be found? Well, we made our own. We made more than these... the rest were baking... (in the toaster oven. God, I miss ovens).

Hand-size shawarmas

And while we were at the Southeast Asian shop, we picked up some green and red thai curry. So last night, we invited a Korean couple over and cooked some Green Thai Curry for them. Served over rice, of course. Turned out really good.

And a Thai meal wouldn't be complete without some fresh Thai spring rolls. They actually turned out quite good as well. Of course, there were more than this... but they were all eaten before I could snap a picture.

And finally....

Photobucket
This is what happens when you ask Dawna to go out and buy fresh fruit while you pay for the groceries. We weighed this... over 7lbs of tomatoes (yes, it's a fruit), kiwis, strawberries and kumquats (more on those in a second.)

Photobucket
Suprisingly, most of the strawberries are gone and it hasn't been 24 hours yet.

Photobucket
And what's a kumquat? Well, this is a kumquat. It's a tiny orange-like thing. You eat the peel and everything. Tastes pretty good.
